Our newest—and very popular—annual adventure into wood type continues at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum.

Jim and Bill Moran will instruct classes from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. During these classes you’ll have access to a fully equipped pressroom with unique machinery and a plethora of type that’s been carefully curated to preserve the tradition of Wood Type. Most importantly, you’ll be spending a fun-filled holiday weekend of printing, learning and laughing with friends—old and new. At the end of the weekend, we hope everyone will be able to share some of their amazing prints with each other.

About the Hamilton Wood Type Museum

The Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum is the only museum dedicated to the preservation, study, production and printing of wood type. With 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns, Hamilton's collection is one of the premier wood type collections in the world. In addition to wood type, the Museum is home to an amazing array of advertising cuts from the 1930s through the 1970s, and all of the equipment necessary to make wood type and print with it, as well as equipment used in the production of hot metal type, tools of the craft and rare type specimen catalogs.

Located between the East and West Twin Rivers on Lake Michigan, the Hamilton Manufacturing Company was the largest wood type producer in the country, when virtually everything was letterpress printed. The company was founded in 1880, and in addition to wood type, the company has manufactured medical office furniture, light tables, the first gas powered clothes dryer (really!) and more; now in its 130th year, the company produces steel lab equipment.

Ever wish you had a roadmap for the elusive work-life balance?

Now you can. Join The Society of Typographic Arts and Justin Ahrens as he presents his new book, Life Kerning™: Creative Ways to Fine Tune Your Perspective on Career and Life.

You know how to design a beautiful layout. But what about balancing a busy creative life? Is it possible to build an inspired life that honors both your passions: a rewarding creative career and a joyful personal existence? Justin is here to tell you that it’s more easily achieved than you might think.

Principal of Rule29, Justin Ahrens, believes the solution is as simple as a process he’s dubbed “life kerning.” Just as fine tuning the kerning can visually perfect your design, making similarly small and deliberate adjustments in everyday life is often all it takes to create a more balanced and meaningful existence. Relevant to every stage of the creative walk from the newbie to the established veteran, this session will give advice, perspectives, and processes to fine tune your everyday routine and build the balanced and fulfilling life you desire, which may only be a small tweak or two away.

About Justin Ahrens, Rule29

Justin Ahrens is principal and creative director at Rule29. His passion for design is rooted in his creative firm’s commitment to “making creative matter ®.” For more than 10 years, Ahrens has led Rule29 in its commitment to both great design and helping others think differently about the world around them. Through a collaborative approach in both strategy and design, Rule29’s culture is just as important as its work. This is particularly evident by the company’s involvement in numerous social causes, including their substantial work in Africa. Ahrens has also been a consistent voice for the creative community as it relates to balancing life, design and business. His obsession for creative is only overshadowed by his passion for being home with his wife, Sarah, and their four amazing kids (who think Dad’s job is listening to music, drawing pictures and playing on the computer). Ahrens’ book, Life Kerning: Creative Ways to Fine Tune Your Perspective on Career and Life is available at lifekerning.com or on amazon.

In today’s fast-paced digital world, does typography even matter? Or is it just another thing of the past?

Western typography has been around for almost 600 years. As technologies rapidly evolve, what was once available only for type setters and typographers is now available to any 3-year old with an iPad that has default fonts and type settings. What does this mean for typography? What does this mean for technology? What does this mean for typographers?

In this talk, Uzi Shmilovici—Founder and CEO of Future Simple—share answers and thoughts from his perspective as someone who is constantly in the intersection of technology and design.

—

Uzi Shmilovici is a entrepreneur as much as he's a designer, programmer and writer. In 2003, Uzi co-founded Netcraft an Israeli web agency focused on user experience and web technologies. Netcraft became the leading web agency overseas, setting new standards in design and development for the web.

In late 2009, he moved to Chicago and from here, he founded Future Simple <http://www.futuresimple.com> and embarked on a new challenge to make business software exciting. Leveraging paradigm shifts in computing (mobility, advanced user interfaces and big data algorithms), we build the next generation of business software.

His unique and international perspective has been featured in such publications and blogs such as Forbes, TechCrunch and Smashing Magazine, where he discusses design, marketing as well has his business ventures.
